Most connected televisions equipped with the Android TV operating system can be connected to the Internet by wire, using an Ethernet cable. But this solution is not necessarily the best to enjoy good performance.


It is still common to hear and read that favoring a wired connection is a wise choice to benefit from a faster speed compared to Wi-Fi. This situation is true, at least in part. Indeed, by using an RJ-45 Ethernet cable to connect your PC directly to your Internet box, you benefit from a more stable connection without signal interference. However, it is also likely that the Ethernet speed is lower than what you can claim when you are on Wi-Fi.

This observation may not be made when talking about a connection between a box and a PC. On the other hand, when it comes to connecting a smart TV to a box, it is likely that you will experience a drop in speed. The reason for this is quite simple.

TVs running Android TV limit wired speed

In practice, it turns out that most connected televisions have a network card that limits Internet speed in the context of a wired connection. Even if you have a 1 Gb/s connection at home and are using a high-end Ethernet cable, your TV may limit the speed to just 100 Mb/s, for example.

However, this observation is not automatic; it often turns out that high-end televisions have more efficient connections. But on entry-level and midrange models, this kind of component is often downgraded in terms of performance, particularly for the sake of economy. It turns out, moreover, that a large number of people automatically use Wi-Fi; some users are not even aware that a wired connection is possible. This is why manufacturers do not communicate much about the performance of the Ethernet port of their televisions.

Is it possible to test the wired connection of a TV?

It is quite possible to test the wired connection of a television under Android TV. To do this, you can simply install the SpeedTest application on your screen. The Netflix application also has a feature of this type: you can find it in the left menu, by clicking on " Get help " and then choosing " Network check ". Once the tests have been carried out, you will have an overview of the Internet speed available in wired mode on your Smart TV.

Do not hesitate to try the experiment in Wi-Fi and Ethernet to determine which is the best connection solution. If you have poor Wi-Fi in the living room, Ethernet may still be the best solution, even if it does not provide the maximum power you can claim. The important thing is above all that you can enjoy your streaming entertainment with good image quality, which does not necessarily require having phenomenal speed.
