Twitter: how to continue to benefit from free two-factor authentication on the social network

Twitter recently announced the end of free two-factor authentication by sending a secret and temporary code by SMS. Fortunately, there is another, always free, solution to protect your Twitter account from hackers.



As of March 20, 2023, only Twitter Blue subscribers will be able to benefit from two-factor authentication via SMS to connect to their favorite social network. However, this type of authentication is essential to avoid having your account hacked.

Luckily, you still have the option of using a mobile authenticator app to receive a verification code to enter each time you log into Twitter. This is the simplest alternative, even if it requires installing a dedicated application, such as Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator.

You must then go to the settings of your Twitter account and, in the security section, turn on two-factor authentication. To register via an authentication application, you will first be asked to associate it with your Twitter account, simply by scanning a QR code on the screen with your smartphone.

Once this first code has been validated, you will then only have to open your authentication application each time you connect to Twitter in order to discover your six-digit validation code. Note that this is automatically renewed every 30 seconds as a security measure. Besides Twitter, this two-factor authentication method also works with most online networks and services.
