What is the difference between groups and societies in the WhatsApp application?

Billions of people around the world use the WhatsApp application, which makes it easy to communicate with their loved ones, their classmates, or their work colleagues, whether through private conversations and calls or through groups called "Groups" or "Communities". Of course, groups and societies are characterized by having communication with more than one person at the same time. There are many who confuse WhatsApp groups with WhatsApp societies and often believe that the second is synonymous with the first. Since they are different, what distinguishes each of them from the other? We came to this article to clarify the difference in detail between WhatsApp groups and WhatsApp societies.

The most prominent differences between groups and societies

Number of members

In November 2022, WhatsApp changed the number of members that can be added to the groups, where you can add up to 1,024 members now after they were 254 before they were increased to 512 members and doubled the maximum weakness, helping business owners and professionals to stay connected. On the other hand, the WhatsApp community is a directive advantage and a great way to organize groups under one umbrella, which allows access to a larger number of fans, and the official can add up to 50 groups or 5,000 people to its advertising group in the WhatsApp society, and this is definitely required to create a WhatsApp community first.

Content sharing

WhatsApp groups differ from WhatsApp societies in terms of sharing content, so the group members can send messages and media and interact with what other members send and create polls ("Polls") and mention others ("Mention"), meaning that the group members can share what they want unless the official registers the scope of participation. Also, the group allows open discussions and members to communicate with each other, as well as allowing members to communicate privately or in the group. As for the WhatsApp society, the matter is different. The creation of WhatsApp groups is a way to give updates across groups. Also, the WhatsApp community allows the official to send messages in the community advertising group so that all the participants can see them.

Also, members of society cannot interact with the messages sent by the official, but they can respond to them through the private channel, and the members of the community cannot see other members with them.

Privacy

With a few adjustments, you can change the privacy settings of WhatsApp groups, except for some settings that you cannot change. For example, if you add members to the WhatsApp group, their phone numbers will be visible to any other member in the group, whether they are registered in contact or not; that is, they have the absolute freedom to save other members' phone numbers and communicate with any other member. In other words, strangers can reach your phone number only by entering the same group, there is no privacy here for your phone number (unlike Telegram).

On the other hand, WhatsApp societies differ completely in this regard. Since WhatsApp societies were established for an organizational purpose based on sending updates to groups, members' privacy is protected by hiding each member’s data from others.

Advantages

The groups allow each member to communicate and interact with other members, and as we mentioned in advance, members can send media such as pictures, videos, documents, and communication parties in the group. Also, organs can redirect to everyone individually, as well as the possibility of making opinion polls, and members can interact with messages and choose one of the members to respond to it; that is, the creation of groups is intended to facilitate interactions between more than one person.

On the other hand, the advantages are limited for WhatsApp societies, where the members are alerted to any alerts or changes within the community, and only the official can share content related to pictures, videos, documents, sites, and communication parties. But there is no possibility to create opinion polls, and therefore there is no way for members to express their opinion within society. As for the number of officials, any number of group officials can be appointed even if their number is at the maximum, which is currently 1,024 members, while the number of societies decreases to only 20 officials.

Advantages of calls

The groups allow for voice and video calls for up to eight members at the same time, and the encrypted conversations are encrypted by a party for the parties and suitable for making small meetings. Also, users can send messages and turn off the video, even reduce the video window, and browse other applications without ending the call. When we return to societies, as is the case with messages, their members cannot make voice or video calls because societies are intended to deliver the official’s message to many members, so there is no need to make calls with their types.

In the end, although groups and societies were specially established to bring users closer to each other, there are differences between them. WhatsApp groups are more interested in discussions and mutual participation. If the goal is to interact with members, you have no choice but to create a group. On the other hand, if you do not want to interact with members, whether sharing content or interacting in all its forms, it is better to create a community. The bottom line is that it is dependent on the way you use it.
